local resident who has requested you to perform a local analysis on the trend for their location

INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES
ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS

Your task:

Prepare advice for a local resident who has requested you to perform a local analysis on the trend for their location. You will present your findings presentation using PowerPoint, keynote or Canva. You are to locate and gather rainfall datasets for the suburb you live in by downloading the dataset from the Bureau of Meteorology Climate website.

The resident wants to know certain things about the data you are dealing with. The details include:

Where did the data come from?

Can the data be trusted?

How do we know the data can be trusted?

Has the data you have presented been edited? If so, how and why.

What does the Rainfall history (Past Weather) tell us?

What trends can you identify?

What is going to happen next (Forecast) for Rainfall based on what has happened previously?

A summary of your overall findings.

2022 Applied Computing Unit 1 Outcome 1: Data Analysis

Extract data for your chosen location*

Choose ONE location from this list: Thornbury, Warrnambool, Healesville, Macedon or Horsham or the suburb you live in.

*Note: If you have VSV classmates at your school, choose a different location to each other so no-one will do the same location. Remember, this is an individual assessment, not a group assessment.

Some Bureau Station location numbers are:

Station number Station name Years of

operation District name Region name

086333 Thornbury 1902-1974 East Central Melbourne

Victoria

090082 Warrnambool (Post Office) 1910-1923 West Coast Warrnambool & South West Victoria

086385 Healesville (Mount Yule) 1998-2014 East Central Yarra- Ranges

078036 Macedon (Forestry) 1873 – 2022 West Central Macedon Ranges

079082 Horsham 1958-2021 South Wimmera Western Victoria

Analysis

As you prepare the data for visualization, keep notes on any changes, manipulations, or modifications you have made to the original dataset. A simple journal or list will be sufficient.

This Data dictionary is provided for database import of Rainfall data have made to the original dataset. A simple journal or list will be sufficient.

Field name Data type Size

ID integer 4 characters

Year Integer 4 characters

Month integer 4 characters

Day integer 4 characters

Daily global Solar Exposure (MJ/min) Double 4 characters

Daily Temperature Double 6 characters

Daily Rainfall Double 10 characters

1. Import the Daily Rainfall into EXCEL for validating and cleaning.

2. Import the cleaned data into a Libre Office database

3. Create Queries to identify the highest (MAX), lowest (MIN) values for the Daily Rainfall for your chosen period.

4. Create a Query and Report which calculates the annual average daily Rainfall Exposure

These values may be used on your presentation.

5. Create charts in EXCEL to communicate information about Rainfall.

Optional:

You may consider using additional data (sun exposure, temperature) that may support (correlate) your findings.

Months or seasons are often referred to when considering weather and climate.

For example: Spring, Winter, Autumn, and Summer are four seasons each of three months HOWEVER, keep it simple (KIS). More data does not always assist with a clearer message.

Visualization

You will need to choose appropriate graphics to enhance your presentation. You presentation should include:

At least three charts, with a brief caption highlighting a trend a feature of the displayed data i.e., Maximum, or minimum value or an unexpected value.

A large heading and sub heading in appropriate size and color according to design principles.

At least one image appropriate to the Bureau Station location should be included.

References for data and images will be in APA style with data source details.

Full bibliography details for all sources.
