2.2 - Syntactic Analysis and the Parser

As described in the textbook readings, Parse performs syntactic analysis. It takes the token stream produced by the Scanner and outputs a Parse Tree.

English Example

Again, by way of analogy to English, the parser attempts to validate the arrangement of words into well-formed phrases. Here are some examples of syntax errors in English from (Hofstadter, 1985) and (Yoda, a long time ago),

"Wars not make one great."

"This sentence no verb." "This is not a complete." "Sentence", "This either."

Although the meaning (semantics) of these sentences are clear, the grammar (syntax) isn't considered to be correct.
